Episode 71
Forged in Fate
After dealing with the Cindersworn, the Soul Survivors make camp with the mindforged cleric known as Forge – and discover how their fates are intertwined.
Recap
The battle against the Cindersworn continued on the road as the Soul Survivors pressed their advantage alongside the bronze-armored cleric, Forge. The fire elemental lashed out within the radius of divine magic, its movements slowed and burned by radiant energy as Forge maintained his spirit guardians. Enemy spellcasters fought desperately, with one unleashing a powerful fireball that engulfed the battlefield – forcing Anton, Willa, and Forge to endure the blast while Gemma worked to counter incoming magic.
In the chaos, Willa briefly fell under the effects of a dominate person spell and turned against her allies before the damage from the explosion broke the control, snapping her back to herself mid-fight. Anton continued to maneuver through the fray with his dancing shortsword, while Forge held the line, striking with divine force and sustaining himself with healing magic. One by one, the remaining cultists fell or were subdued, ending the immediate threat.
In the aftermath, the party stabilized the situation and took two cultists alive for questioning. As they regrouped, a distant screech drew their attention skyward, where a dragon-like creature with a rider – identified as the Spider Lily, a leader within the Cindersworn – flew west toward the direction of the volcano. Forge revealed that his own companions had been taken by her forces days earlier, further aligning his goals with the party’s.
During interrogation, the captured cultists proved fanatical and resistant, but under magical coercion they revealed key information: the Cindersworn operate from within and beneath a temple of Moradin, tied to their volcanic stronghold, and a ritual is underway involving Sovemil, whose magic is being drained to empower their plans. They also mentioned fire giants within the volcano and confirmed that the Trident of Water had been corrupted, its power twisted from water into fire. Despite this, the cultists remained defiant, proclaiming devotion to their Flamemother and the coming destruction she would bring.
As night fell, the group made camp and spoke further with Forge, learning that he was sent by Pangenan with a mission tied to the Heartstone within the volcano Khorir. He explained his belief that the stone must be protected, not exploited, and that the Cindersworn seek to use it to resurrect a powerful red dragon. Their goals appeared aligned, and Forge agreed to aid the party in reaching the volcano.
The Soul Survivors then debated the fate of their prisoners, weighing justice against practicality, before ultimately choosing not to execute them. Instead, Gemma cast a suggestion spell on both captives, urging them to reflect deeply on their choices and the path they had taken.
That night, as the camp settled into uneasy rest, Gemma was suddenly jolted awake. At her feet sat the sealed jewelry box entrusted to her back in Khel Kuldir – though she had no memory of placing it there. From within, faint, indiscernible whispers called out. Reaching out with her senses, she felt a surge of emotion from the box – overwhelming pain above all else. When she spoke aloud, Willa awoke beside her, and the whispers faded into silence, leaving only the lingering presence of something waiting.
