Episode 70
The Spark of Flame
Anton, Gemma, and Willa grapple with the responsibility laid before them and prepare to travel within the Penumbra Hills. On the road, they meet a new soul fighting against the Cindersworn.
Recap
The Soul Survivors emerged from the sewers beneath Vuldohr carrying more than treasure. They returned first to Vildash’s home, where the weight of Willa’s trial in Pangenan settled over the group. The behir, the Bracers of Shimmering Scales, and the recorded message from Willa’s parents left much to unpack.
Vildash listened carefully as they recounted what transpired, how the mindforged tested Willa under her birth name, and how her mother’s message revealed Pangenan’s origins and the purpose behind sending her away. Vildash spoke about his past, how he failed to use the bracers to extract an emerald Dragonmind Shard from its Heartstone, and the reality of the sacrifice and responsibility laid upon Willa to return to her homeland. Before leaving, Vildash whispered a cryptic message to Willa about following her true self.
With little else to accomplish underground, the Soul Survivors made their way back to the Barrel & Bucket. At the inn, the evening unfolded in quieter, more personal ways. Within the privacy of her room, Willa reached out to Sardior with her Dragonmind Shard, asking to speak with her birth mother, Shilma. The shard began to pulse, and her mother spoke with a measured, resolute tone, reaffirming Willa’s destiny before promptly ending the conversation. Willa then used the Eardrop to cast a sending spell to Ma Kettlewhistle, whose response was warmer and more intimate. With a sigh, Willa curled up in bed and fell asleep.
Meanwhile, Anton and Gemma spoke with Symphona, the dazzling elven bard, sharing pieces of what they’d uncovered. They agreed to meet again when they both reached Dhel Todir – the bard’s next tour destination and where Gemma had unfinished business. By morning, the decision was made to leave Vuldohr and to travel to the Vault of the Oath-Forged, so Anton could claim the Moonblade of Alaynia. The party purchased horses and traveling supplies for the road ahead, riding out beneath the shadows of the Penumbra Hills.
The journey did not remain quiet for long. On the road beyond the hill-town, the party encountered a lone cleric in heavy bronze armor, locked in combat against members of the Cindersworn and their summoned fire elemental. The cultists pressed hard, attempting to overwhelm the divine warrior, and without hesitation, the Soul Survivors intervened. Anton charged into the fray on horseback while dual wielding with his new dancing shortsword, Willa approached the elemental and struck with her ice maul, and Gemma brought arcane force against the fire-wielding zealots.
A flying Cindersworn pyromancer cast fireball down upon Willa and Anton, nearly killing the paladin’s new steed. The cleric cast a spiritual guardians spell, springing images of dancing celestial dwarves in an aura of divine magic. Gemma countered several spell attacks from the Cindersworn mages, deflecting them back, which caused the pyromancer to lose concentration on his fly spell and fall into the rocky creek below.
As steel rings against steel and magic clashes with flame, the Soul Survivors fight not just to save a stranger on the road, but to confront the ever-spreading reach of the Cindersworn, unaware of how this will shape the path ahead.
