Episode 11
Skeletons in the Closet
The adventurers search for the password to the spire’s underground chamber at the Oaktown Academy, learn of its past inhabitant, and explore what lies within.
Recap
Our band of eclectic adventurers sought the password to the magically sealed door beneath the Laughing Spire in Oaktown. Searching the other floors, Raz’sik found an old journal belonging to a child named Sam, who seemed to uncover the history behind the spire’s previous owner while researching within the Oaktown Academy’s library.
Once belonging to a human wizard named Oloroph, legend says he went mad when the Empire spread to the Rhorsia Forest, disappearing without a trace. Having frequented the underground door, Sam also discovered a treasure hoard that seemed to appear one day in front of it. At first distrusting the treasure as perhaps an arcane trick of the mind, he ultimately succumbed to greed. He, too, vanished without a trace.
The party decided to follow the lead to the library, but first, they visited the Sanctuary of Peace, the local temple to Sehanine. There, Anton sought a healer to remove his curse of lycanthropy. The priestess Celaena, through ritual, healed the human fighter, but her magic caused a reaction within Willa that caused her to leave during the ceremony.
While Anton debated his “donation” to the church, Gemma met Willa outside to check on her. They exchanged a moment of friendship, and the gem dragonborn said she would reveal to the group her secret when the time was right.
At the Academy library, Raz’sik and Gemma found a secret compartment containing four illegal books, one of which was the spellbook of Oloroph, the mysterious wizard of Laughing Spire. Within it contained an incantation to unlock the door beneath the decrepit tower.
Back at the door, Willa translated the language from Rhorsian, and Gemma attempted to perform the spell. After a few failed tries and a wild magic cast of Confusion upon the group, the young sorceress managed to open it, unveiling a passage of natural stone to a dark cave, the sound of rushing water, and a mysterious cackle echoing from within.
Entering the darkness with a light spell upon Anton’s shortsword and Willa’s amethyst necklace, which now glowed with a brilliant purple light, a horde of skeletons rose from the ground to meet them – as well as a singular floating skull, wreathed in green flames.
After an arduous battle against the undead – during which Willa used a blood rite to deal ice damage with her maul, Anton’s blades split rib cages, Gemma spewed bolts of fire, Raz’sik threw psychic daggers, and Sovemil trying to keep up with heals… all that remained was the flameskull before them, cackling in defiance….
